Evacuation Preparation for Pets

Jeanette Yamamoto

Hi everyone! In this episode of Java with Jeanette the Vet, I shared a personal story about the recent Hughes Fire near Castaic, which came dangerously close to both my home and office. Thankfully, our office and home are safe, but going through an evacuation really made me think about how important it is to be prepared—especially for our pets.

Here’s what I covered in the video:

  • Evacuation Preparedness for Pets:

    • I talked about the importance of having a grab-and-go kit ready for your pets. This should include essentials like food, water, bowls, medications, carriers, beds, and blankets.

    • If your pet gets anxious in stressful situations, calming agents like essential oils (I personally use doTERRA) can really help.

    • I also reminded everyone to check their ventilation in smoky areas since pets are much more sensitive to smells than we are.

  • Gratitude & Reflection:

    • I opened up about how hard it was to leave not knowing if everything would be okay, but I’m incredibly grateful for my family, my staff, and the fact that our building and home were spared.

While I typically focus on senior pet care, hospice, and end-of-life topics, I felt this was too important not to share after what we just went through.

Please let me know if there are any specific topics you'd like me to cover in future videos! Take care, and I’ll see you next time!
